There are some conflicting opinions about duplicate content and its use when discussing SEO (search engine optimization) particularly in driving home based business opportunity leads to your web site. I have done some pretty hefty research on the issue of SEO and how it works and most information suggests that search engines will penalize you when it comes to duplicate content.

I say no if you use common sense and the following is why!!

When I first got involved in trying to find a home based business opportunity and I was learning all I could about internet marketing, I would often take two steps forward and one step back, that sound familiar? What I learned (and still experience) is that the so called experts are often people like me and really do not have hard evidence on the subject. You can go to many sources on the internet and find all kinds of things that vary about the information you are looking for that I determined that I needed to discern for myself what is accurate. I can tell you now with all certainty that if you have looked into SEO, you may have been told that duplicate content is a no no when you are looking to drive home based business opportunity leads to your site.

To be sure, there are things you can do with duplicate content that will hurt your SERP (search engine page ranking). I believe much of it is probably black hat type things. There is the stupidity factor as well but I do not think you are going to post the same article over and over on your blog are you? I could give dozens of examples in ways that you would get penalized but here is the thing though…

Google and all of the other search engines are not your enemy! They are just designed with many algorithms in place to keep everyone on a level playing field. Let me explain what happens to your content and I will be using Google for the example.

There are literally thousands of lower end computers that are tied into each other in a way that is called parallel processing. I was an internet engineer for years and can tell you that this process is used quite a bit and it is pretty powerful. Each computer is running the same process on it in the fact that they are all repeatedly sending queries to all of the servers on the internet. For most people, it is these servers in which your web site resides. If Google queries your server and they see new content, they will do what is called a “fresh crawl”. The server will then send the “whole” page where the content is found back to Google. This same process includes articles in article directories.

It is at this time that Google receives the page with the new content and will then “index” it. They will then store the content and links into different areas for later. Then, Google will take the links and content and make comparisons with everything else they indexed.

When they make their comparisons, it is at this time that will will “pitch” what is determined to be duplicate content as well as links they already have a record for. They keep that content that they found first and discard the rest!!

Are you penalized? No…It just does not help you with SEO!

You are often told duplicate content will hurt you but in the same breath, are told to submit your articles too many directory sites. They are correct in telling you this because…

You Will Not Get Penalized For Doing This!

If you are not doing something crazy or black hat with your content, search engines will just pitch your duplicate content and keep the first content they have found. The thing about submitting your article to other directories is that it will allow you to get your article looked at by a larger audience. (If in doing so though, you only want to submit to article directories of a page rank of 6 or better). This in turn drives more traffic to your home based business opportunity site which creates more leads.

There is one way in which posting to other article directory sites can help your SEO. More viewers means more chances that your article will be published by others. This in turn would give you a link from their site to yours.
